These 2 Songs Have 1 Thing In Common

Isn’t listening to music fun? I love just listening to music and letting my brain see the patterns being shaped in front of me, in my head.

As a musician I’m always trying to notice the patterns in music, patterns which define the phrases designed by the writer. I love patterns, and yes, I’m probably on the spectrum but it doesn’t matter.

“Good Life” by the 1980’s pop dance band Inner City (consisting of house/techno producer Kevin Saunderson and vocalist Paris Grey) is undeniably one of the all-time iconic pop-house hits of the late 80s. At the time, it was the sound of the future.

“Comment Te Dire Adieu” was a hit sung by Communards vocalist Jimmy Somerville and June Miles-Kingston, and produced by Pascal Gabriel, which hit the charts in 1989.

“Good Life” popped up on some TV show, and I listened. Then the synth run happened and I thought “That sounds exactly like another synth run I’ve heard, and love”. After a little dig around in the music of my past, I realised it was the “Comment Te Dire Adieu” track.

This observation, and the below video talking about it, won’t change the world, go viral, or affect anybody on an emotional level, but it might tickle your ears or your pattern recognition engine in the same way it tickled me :)
